Tuning your compound bow is an essential part of bow hunting and archery. Fine tuning your bow helps ensure that it’s performing at its peak and that you’ll have the most accurate shots at your target. An ill-tuned bow can lead to misfires and poor accuracy, which is why it’s important to get it just right. There are several things you can do to tune your bow, such as adjusting the draw weight, setting the peep sight, sighting in the bow, and making sure your arrows are the correct size and weight. One of the most important elements of tuning a compound bow is making a new bow string. A quality bow string can make a huge difference in how well a bow functions, and making your own bow string gives you total control over the material, shape, and strength. Here are some bow tuning tips and pointers on making a compound bow string from scratch.

Selecting the Right Materials
Making a compound bow string from scratch requires three materials: bow string material, serving material, and center serving string. Depending on the type of bow you have, you’ll need to select the right type and gauge of material for each part of the bow string.
Bow String Material
This is the main part of the bow string and will determine the overall strength and function of the bow. It should be made from a high quality material, such as Dacron or Fastflight. It’s important to select the right gauge of material based on your bow’s draw weight—your local archery shop can help you pick the right type.
This material is used to reinforce the string and make it more durable. Most standard bow strings are made from a braided material, such as Spectra or Kevlar. Again, make sure you’re using the right type and gauge of material for your bow.
Center Serving String
This material is used to secure the serving thread in place. It’s usually made of waxed nylon thread and should be lighter than the bow string material.
Making the Bow String
Once you have all the materials, you’ll need to lay them out in the proper order. Start by laying out the bow string material with the ends of the string even. Make sure the string material is the right length—you can get help from your local archery shop if you’re not sure. Next, take the serving material and start winding it around the bow string from one end to the other. Make sure you wrap the material evenly and securely. Finally, use the center serving thread to secure the serving material in place.
You’ll also need to secure the ends of the bow string with either plastic serrations or metal end loops. This will help prevent the string from slipping and wearing out. Once you’ve secured the ends, you should heat-set the string to make sure it won’t fray or unravel. Once it’s set, you’ll need to add the peep sight and adjust the draw weight before sighting in the bow.
Making a bow string from scratch requires care and precision, but it’s a necessary part of tuning a compound bow for peak performance. Selecting the right materials for the bow string, serving, and center serving string is the first step, and making sure they’re wound properly and secured is key. With the proper tuning and maintenance, a quality bow string will make your bow perform better and last longer.
