Archers are always looking for ways to improve their accuracy while shooting, and adjustments to a bow’s weight and tiller can provide a great way to do so. Many archers make subtle adjustments to their bows to ensure that their arrows travel as accurately and consistently as possible. These adjustments are known as bow weight adjustment and bow tiller, both of which improve a bow’s performance by evening out the force used to draw the bowstring.

Bow Weight Adjustment
The main purpose of bow weight adjustment is to shift the weight of the bow such that it is evenly balanced while drawing the bowstring. A heavier draw weight often causes the bow to be slightly off-balance, making it more difficult to fire the arrows consistently. Adjusting the weight of the bow can help to reduce the inconsistency, improving accuracy and consistency of shots.
Adjusting the Weight
Adjusting the weight of the bow is a relatively simple process. The first step is to remove the limbs from the riser. Depending upon the bow design, this will either require unscrewing the limbs or unclamping the limb pockets. From there, the draw weight of the bow can be adjusted by either adding or removing weight from the limbs. This is accomplished by either using additional limb bolts or weights or by using a limb weight adjuster. Once the desired weight is achieved, the limbs can be reattached to the riser and the process should be repeated on the other limb.
Bow Tiller
In addition to adjusting the weight of the bow, adjusting the bow tiller can also improve accuracy and consistency of shots. The tiller is a measurement of the flex of the bow limbs—how much the tips of the limbs move when the bowstring is drawn. In an ideal situation, the tiller measurement is just equal on both limbs, but this isn’t always the case. On some bows, one limb may have a slightly higher or lower tiller than the other. This can cause the bowstring to pull down in one direction or the other, greatly affecting accuracy and consistency of the shots.
Adjusting the Tiller
Adjusting the tiller of the bow is a slightly more complicated process than adjusting the weight and will require the use of special tools. Most archery shops and pro shops have the necessary tools available for this purpose. The first step is to remove the limbs from the riser, as was done when adjusting the draw weight. Once the limbs are off, the tiller can be adjusted by removing tiller bars from the limbs and adding new ones of the correct size. These tiller bars will be designed to fit the existing limb pockets, and the process of removing and inserting them is relatively straightforward. Once the tiller is to the desired measurement, the limbs can be reattached to the riser and the process can be repeated with the other limb.
Bow weight adjustment and bow tiller adjustment can both have a positive effect on the accuracy and consistency of shots, but it is important to remember that these adjustments are only useful if the bow is set up correctly to begin with. Setting up a bow with the correct draw weight, length, and tiller measurements will provide a great foundation, and any adjustments made thereafter will improve upon that foundation. Properly adjusting a bow weight and tiller can provide an archer with the increased accuracy they are looking for, and can be part of an overall improvement plan designed to increase accuracy and consistency.
