Choosing the Equipment
Before heading out on your bowfishing adventure, you need to select the right equipment. A good quality compound bow is best for bowfishing as it provides more power and accuracy than a traditional bow, allowing you to make more accurate shots. Additionally, you should choose a bow that is correctly sized for your body type and has adjustable draw weight. Selecting a reel for your bow is also important. Spincast reels are a good choice for beginner bowfishers as they are easy to use and the line can easily be retrieved. The arrows used for bowfishing are also different from traditional arrows, as fish arrows are heavier and made from paddle shafts and barbed tips.
Using Chum
Using chum is an effective way to draw in the tilapia to a specific area. You can make your own chum by mixing canned corn, cat food, or other ingredients into a slurry and placing it where you plan to bowfish. You can also buy premade chum pellets or sticks. Chum will draw in the fish and make them easier to spot.
Spotting the Tilapia
Once the chum has attracted the tilapia to the area, you can begin to spot them. Tilapia tend to stay near the surface of the water and can easily be seen in the shallower depths. Look for areas with sunlight reflecting off the water, as this often indicates that there are schools of fish in the area. Scan the water surface for any signs of movement as this can be a telltale sign that tilapia is present.
Shooting the Tilapia
Once you have located a school of tilapia, you can begin shooting. Aiming for the eyes of the fish is the most effective spot for a clean catch, as it will immobilize the fish instantly. If a fish is within a few feet of your target, it is often best to aim a few inches behind the eyes, as this will ensure that your arrow has enough momentum to reach the fish. When it comes to shooting, keep in mind that bowfishing arrows travel slower than regular arrows, so you need to allow some time for the arrow to reach the fish. If you keep these simple tips in mind, you can increase your chances of a successful catch.
Bowfishing for tilapia is a great way to enjoy a unique fishing experience and put a delicious dinner on the table. Utilizing a compound bow and the proper techniques and equipment can help increase your chances of catching more, bigger tilapia. With the right knowledge and preparation, bowfishing for tilapia can become a fun and rewarding hobby for the whole family.
Bowfishing Tilapia for Dinner with Compound Bow
We are doing a tilapia catch n cook via bowfshing with compound and recurve bows with lunkerstv, outlaw and Hayden on a lake. Fishing for tilapia can be very difficult because they in a lot of small micro organisms and are not prone to hitting lures. Using these primitive bows for bow fishing we are able to target them directly when we see them in the shallow water. They are very fast though! This was a tough target to hit. Once we got enough for dinner, Outlaw used his favorite fish recipe to cook them up in the over. They tasted a lot like the grass where we were fishing. Because the water was so warm, these fish grow very fast and typically don’t taste as good as cold water fish.
