Learning archery is a fun and rewarding activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. In this second class of a three-part series, we will focus on shooting a compound bow. Shooting a compound bow is a bit more challenging than shooting a recurve bow, but with the proper instruction and practice, anyone can learn how to shoot accurately.
Table of Contents
Understanding Compound Bows
The most important part of shooting a compound bow is understanding how it works. Compound bows are different than recurve bows in that they use cams, a pulley system, and cables to generate power. This means that the shooter does not have to draw the bow as far back as they do with a recurve bow, making them much easier to shoot. With a compound bow, the force normally needed to draw a bow is provided by the pulley system.
Stance and Anchor Points
The other important consideration when shooting a compound bow is making sure you have a proper stance and anchor points. Your stance should be comfortable and balanced, so you will be stable when you are shooting. You also want to ensure that your draw hand is close to your face, as this will help you keep the bow steady and make it easier to release the arrow on target.
Grip and Draw
The proper grip on the bow handle is also very important when shooting a compound bow. Your grip should be firm but not too tight and the four fingers of your bow hand should evenly distribute the pressure on the handle. Once you have your grip and stance set, it is time to begin drawing the bow. Make sure you keep the bow hand steady and draw the bow string back as slowly and consciously as possible. The goal is to keep your arm as straight as possible and steady, as this will help to ensure the bow will stay level when you are shooting.
Release and Follow Through
When you have your bow drawn back to the anchor point, it is time to release the arrow and follow through. Make sure you keep your focus on the target and use the same consistent form that you used when drawing the bow. After the arrow has been released, keep your draw hand in the same position until the arrow has traveled down the range and impacted the target. This is known as follow through and it is an essential part of shooting a compound bow.
Learning how to shoot a compound bow can take some practice, but with the right instruction, anyone can learn to shoot accurately. Understanding the mechanics of the bow, having a proper stance and anchor points, making sure your draw is smooth and consistent, and following through after the arrow has been released are the important things to remember when shooting a compound bow. With practice and confidence, anyone can become a skilled archer in no time.
