Restringing a compound bow can seem like a daunting task for anyone who is unfamiliar with its internal workings. Thankfully, this job isn’t as hard as you may think. Depending on the type of compound bow and on the skill of the bow technician, restringing a bow may take between 30 minutes and a few hours.

The Process of Restringing a Compound Bow
Before a bow can be restrung, certain pieces of the structure need to be removed. To remove limb pockets, screws are typically used. The cams and bowstring rests also need to be taken off, as do the idler wheel and cable guard. With a complete disassembly, it’s time to measure the length of the bowstring. The working length of the current bowstring should be measured so that an accurate new string can be constructed.
Building the New Bowstring
Using the proper length of the new bowstring, archers or bow technicians begin by forming a nocking loop using the center serving material. Then, serving material is used to create a serving at one of the ends of the string in a simple 12-strand pattern. After attaching the modulus material to the loop and one end of the string, the strand pattern is repeated on the other end. This is time-consuming and delicate work, as the number of knots must be kept precise.
Installing the New Bowstring
With the new bowstring crafted, the next step is to install it on the bow’s limbs. This can be done with a bow press, which helps keep the string plumb while in position. The most important part is to not overstress the limbs. Then, the cams, limb pockets, and rest views can be put back on, followed by tightening the screws. Lastly, to attach the center part of the bowstring, the string has to be wound and tightened around the idler wheel.
Tuning the Compound Bow
Lastly, for the bow to operate properly and at maximum performance, it will require tuning. This includes adjusting the timing, the tiller, and the launch angle of the bowstring, along with tuning the nocking points and centershot. If done correctly, the restringing of the compound bow is complete. Otherwise, the technician might need to adjust the equipment or string to fine-tune the setup.
Restringing a compound bow may seem like a complicated process, but with the right tools and a bit of determination, it is possible to do the job correctly and within a relatively short amount of time. Even with more complicated bowstring designs, experienced technicians can restring a bow in a few hours. Working systematically and paying attention to detail are the secrets to successful restringing and tuning of a compound bow.
