Shooting a compound bow accurately is both an art and a science. Those who practice shooting accuracy with a compound bow develop a keen eye, steady hand and a deep understanding of angles, leverage, and force. The bow itself is only as good as the person shooting it and having an accurate shot can make all the difference for hunting or recreation. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to accurately shoot a compound bow.

Step 1: Establish a Proper Stance
Before aiming at the target, establish a proper stance that is comfortable and therefore accurate. Proper stance includes standing side-on to the target with the feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent and the bow arm extended alongside the body. Additionally, make sure the back, chest and shoulders are properly aligned.
Step 2: Drawing the Bow
Once in a proper stance, the first step towards accurately shooting a compound bow is to draw the bow and hook up an arrow. Start by hooking the arrow on the bowstring, with the arrow nock facing away from the bow. Next, attach the release aid to the bowstring’s D-loop. Then, make sure the other hand is placed firmly on the part of the bow known as the grip. Finally, draw the bow by pulling the back elbow back, towards the wall behind the shooter. Keep the elbow pulled in close to the body at all times and make sure the upper arm is pulled back instead of out.
Step 3: Aiming the Bow
Once the bow is drawn, it is time to aim the bow at the target. To increase accuracy, the shooter should concentrate on getting the arrow tip aligned with the pin and the target. To do this, the shooter must be sure that the bow-sight pin is lined up in the direction of the target. The shooter should also check to make sure the bow is level, meaning the arrow should be floating parallel to the ground. Additionally, shooters should use a peep sight to help aim accurately.
Step 4: Release the Arrow
Once the bow is in a proper stance, the arrow is drawn with the release aid attached, and the bow is aimed at the target, the next step is to release the arrow. To do this, the shooter should focus on the target, rather than the bow itself. Using the release aid, the shooter should release the arrow smoothly and steadily.
Step 5: Follow Through
After releasing the arrow, the bowstring should keep moving forward until both arms are at a fully extended position. This is known as the follow-through. When the shooter feels the bowstring stop, the shooter should naturally allow both arms to relax. This will help the shooter stay focused on the target.
Increasing accuracy with a compound bow is not always easy, but with practice, it can be perfected. With a combination of proper stance, drawing the bow, aiming and releasing the arrow, and following through, any shooter can master the art of accurately shooting a compound bow.
