Adjusting Cam Timing on a Compound Bow
Step 1: Remove the Strings and Cables
- Using the 1/8” and 5/64” Allen wrenches, remove the limb bolts from the riser and disconnect the strings and cables.
- Ensure that the bow is securely clamped in a bowpress.
Step 2: Locate the Cam Timing Markers
- Using the bow square, locate the cam timing markers on the inside of the limb.
- These markers will typically have a line on one side and a dot on the other. Make sure that the markers are facing the same direction on both limbs.
Step 3: Adjusting the Draw Length and/or Draw Weight
- Using the 1/8” and 5/64” Allen wrenches, adjust the limb bolts to either increase or decrease the draw length and/or draw weight of the bow.
- Ensure that the limb bolts are not over-tightened, as this could cause damage to the bow.
- Once the desired draw length and/or draw weight is achieved, it is important to torque the limb bolts to the manufacturer’s recommended specifications.
Step 4: Check the Cam Timing Markers
- Once the limb bolts are torqued and the draw length and/or draw weight is adjusted, re-check the cam timing markers to make sure they are still facing the same way on both limbs.
Step 5: Re-String the Bow
- Re-assemble the bow by re-connecting the strings and cables, and replacing the limb bolts.
- Ensure that the strings and cables are properly installed, so as not to affect the cam timing.
Step 6: Tune and Test the Bow
- Using a bow scale, fine-tune the draw weight and draw length of the bow to ensure proper cam timing.
- Test the bow on the range or in the field to ensure proper performance and accuracy.
Adjusting cam timing on a compound bow is not overly complicated, provided you have the right tools and knowledge. Following the steps outlined here will help you optimize your bow performance, and help ensure you’re getting the most out of every shot. As always, proper maintenance and tuning of your compound bow is necessary for maximum enjoyment and success on the range or in the field.
