How To Choose The Right Arrows For Your Compound Bow?

Selecting the right arrows for your compound bow can be a daunting task for a beginner archer. The size, weight and materials of the arrows all contribute to how accurately and effectively you can shoot your bow. It’s important then, to ensure you make an informed decision when choosing the arrows for your bow.

Steps To Choose The Right Arrows

Step 1: Determine Your Draw Length

The draw length is the amount the archer must draw back to shoot the arrow and is measured in inches. To figure out your draw length you need to measure the distance between the nocking point and the back of your bow while draw it back full.

Step 2: Understand Bow Weight

The right arrow should equal the draw weight of your bow. This means that the arrow should be able to be drawn and launched without causing too much strain on the archer as well as having enough power to get it to the target. A less accurate way of selecting the correct arrow weight is to select an arrow that is 12-15g heavier than the draw weight of your bow.

Step 3: Select An Arrow Spine

An arrow’s spine is determined by its stiffness, which is based on the arrow’s diameter and materials of construction. For example, an arrow with a smaller diameter and constructed with light material such as carbon, would be classified as having a stiffer spine, as it can resist more pressure than a heavier aluminium arrow.

Step 4: Select An Arrow Length

The length of the arrow should be generally 2-3 inches longer than the draw length. This allows for plenty of clearance between the arrow and the archer’s arm when shooting, and helps the archer draw the bow with the correct form.

Step 5: Select The Right Shaft Material

There are two main shaft materials for arrows: Aluminum and Carbon.

    Aluminum

  • Cheaper in comparison to carbon
  • Very durable
  • More forgiving when shot
    Carbon

  • More expensive in comparison to aluminum
  • Lightweight and durable
  • High accuracy

Step 6: Select The Right Points

Points are what attach the arrow to the target and are available in a range of materials. The most common points are made from steel, brass and carbon. Make sure to select the correct points based on the material of your target and the range you intend to shoot at.

Choosing the right arrows for your compound bow is as important as shooting with the correct technique. Ensure that you take the time to get it right and you’ll be reaping the rewards of accurate shooting with more confidence and better results.

When selecting your arrows, start by determining your draw length, and then make sure the arrow’s spine and weight are in line with your bow. Take into consideration the length, shaft material, and points you require as well, as this will all affect the performance of the arrow and your accuracy. With the right arrows, you’ll be ready to hit the target time and time again.
