Archer’s Grip
The first step in learning how to hold a compound bow is the archer’s grip. To do this, stand with feet shoulder-width apart, feet pointing straight ahead. Reach up and grasp the handle of the bow in your dominant hand, using your four fingers to firmly grip the bow. Make sure your hand is slightly above the grip, allowing for easy release of the string. Once firmly gripping the bow, use your other hand to support the grip and make a bubble shape with your fingertips.
String Hand
With the archer’s grip in place, reach up and grab the string with your other hand, firmly grasping it with four fingers. Your thumb can help support the string, but make sure you are not gripping it too tightly. The back of your hand should be facing your body and the string should be running up the back of your fingers.
Draw
Once you have your grip and string hold set, it is time to draw the compound bow. Push your bow arm forward, locking your elbow, and bring your string arm up and back towards your face. Make sure you are keeping your bow arm shoulder parallel to the ground and your string arm shoulder slightly above the ground.
Anchor
The anchor point is the position in which the arrow will connect the string to the string of the compound bow. In a compound bow, this anchor point should be held at the jawbone or at the corner of the mouth. Keeping the anchor point steady and consistent will help ensure accuracy in shooting.
Release
When you are ready to release the arrow, make sure the bow is fully drawn and the arrow is resting directly on the arrow rest. Then, relax your grip on the string and release your fingers by pointing them towards the sky. Make sure to not let your string hand drift away from your face and use your release to help you do so.
Learning how to properly hold a compound bow is essential for any archer. It is important to practice each step and get comfortable with the bow in your hand. Doing so can help you become a better archer and get more accurate shots in the field. As with any skill, practice makes perfect, so get out and continually hone your technique.
