Steps to Measure Draw Length

Step 1: Choose Your Measuring Tool

The two most common tools used to measure draw length are a draw length ruler and a measuring tape. Both tools provide accurate results. However, the draw length ruler is the preferred option as it takes into account the shape of the compound bow as well as the distance between the cams.

Step 2: Set Up the Bow

Position the bow so that it is in a level, secure spot. Make sure that all accessories, such as the quiver and stabilizer, are removed. You will also want to make sure the cables, strings and limbs are tensioned properly before taking any measurements.

Step 3: Find the Draw Length Measuring Point

Once you have the bow set up, it’s time to locate the draw length measuring point. On most compound bow models, you’ll find this point below the limb pocket, near where the string travels through the cams. In other words, this is the point where your ridge attaches to the string and cams.

Step 4: Take the Measurement

If you are using a ruler, place it on the draw length measuring point and slide it away from the bow to the full draw position. This is usually located at the back of the bow, opposite of the cams. The markings at the full draw position will give you the draw length in inches.

If you are using a measuring tape, remove the string from the cams and lay it out flat on the floor. Measure from the draw length measuring point to the full draw position and take the measurement in inches.

Step 5: Confirm the Measurement

Once you have taken the measurement, it’s important to confirm that it is accurate. Place the bow in the full draw position and measure from the draw length measuring point to the full draw position. Make sure that the measurement matches the one you took before.

Knowing how to measure the draw length on a compound bow is a great way to make sure that you get the right bow for your shooting style. By following the steps outlined above, you will be able to accurately measure the draw length and find the perfect bow for you.
