How to Shoot a Compound Bow
Preparation
- Choose a shooting style – every archer has a unique shooting style, and you need to choose yours to accurately hit your target. You’ll need to determine whether you prefer a static anchor point, moving anchor point, or a combination of the two.
- Select the right gear – you will need a quality bow and arrows, a bow arm guard, and a finger guard.
- Make sure your stance is correct – you should stand straight up with your feet shoulder width apart, your knees slightly bent, and your shoulders parallel.
- Adjust your release – make sure your release is comfortable and secure on your bowstring.
Drawing the Bow
- Grasp the bow handle with your non-dominant hand and place the trigger button of the release in the pocket of your thumb and index finger. Wrap your fingers around the bow handle.
- Place your dominant hand onto the grip of the bow and draw the string back with your index finger.
- Control your breathing – keep breathing in and out until you draw the string to your anchor point.
- Establish an anchor point – as you draw the bowstring back, raise the draw arm and hold it close to your face.
Aiming
- Gently move your bow arm to achieve your desired aim.
- Contract your back muscles and relax your shoulder muscles as you draw the bowstring to attain a steady aim.
- Focus on the target.
- Do not move your head as you are aiming.
Releasing the Arrow
- Pull the trigger of the release to release the arrow when you are confident with your aim.
- Keep your bow arm steady and don’t move the bow after releasing the arrow.
Shooting a compound bow is a skill that requires practice and patience. It is a fun and rewarding challenge, but if you don’t take the time to learn the basics and practice your technique, you will not be able to hit the mark consistently.
