On December 21st, 2021, an 11 year old kid kill shot on a deer in the small hunting community of Lovekin, Texas had some asking if this was a responsible hunting practice. It was a game changing experience for the child who had only recently begun learning the skills necessary for successful hunting. The story has been heavily discussed but there are many questions that remain unanswered. Was this a responsible hunt and, if not, what should have been done differently?

The hunt took place in mid-December, 2021, and it was the 11 year old’s first ever hunting experience. He was with a small hunting party consisting of three adults who were all licenced and experienced hunters. This is an important part of the story as, for a successful and responsible hunt, there needs to be experienced adults present to ensure safety and ethical hunting protocols are observed.
The deer itself was a young buck that had recently completed its second full year of life. By size and weight standards, it was classified as a mature deer and with that came special regulations. In Texas, hunters are only allowed to hunt mature deer during certain times of the year and with specified equipment. The adult hunters in the party displayed a good level of knowledge in this area and were able to determine that the deer would be legal to hunt.
The firearm used in the hunt was a 30-06 rifle, a legal and standard firearm for hunting deer. The 11 year old was inexperienced and new to hunting, so the adult hunters chose a weapon that had a good balance of light weight and power. This would allow the 11 year old an adequate chance of success while at the same time reducing the recoil and kickback that can often be experienced.
Safety and Responsible Hunting
Before the hunt began, the adult hunters made sure that the 11 year old had had proper safety training, knew how to use the gun safely, understood and respected the rules of hunting, and was wearing the required safety equipment. The adult hunters also made sure that there were no bystanders and that the deer was far enough away to ensure that any missed shots would not hit any person or property. In addition, the adults kept the 11 year old under their direct supervision at all times and only allowed him to shoot when given the go ahead.
When the 11 year old was given permission to take the shot, he did so and succeeded in killing the deer in one shot. The adult hunters praised the 11 year old for his accuracy and precision and the group celebrated the successful hunt.
The 11 year old’s successful hunt and kill shot on a deer was a full display of responsible and ethical hunting. Everything was done to the letter of the law and the child was kept under constant supervision. In addition, the geographically isolated area in which the hunt took place was the perfect setting for such a hunt, as there was no risk of injury to anyone or any property. With that said, such hunts should be done responsibly and under the close supervision of experienced adults to ensure both safety and ethical hunting.
The 11 year old’s kill shot on the deer was admirable and impressive given his inexperience in hunting. It is stories like this that help to propagate the tradition of hunting and maintain the culture and practice of it. This is an experience that the 11 year old and the adult hunters involved would never forget and is a testament to the tradition of hunting and its importance in today’s society.
