Archery is an ancient sport that has been around for centuries, and Olympic archers have taken their skills to a new level with their amazing bows that draw attention for all their gadgets and devices. So, what are all these attachments and decorations on an Olympic bow?
Table of Contents
Bow Sight
The bow sight is one of the most important attachments on an Olympic bow. It is used for alignment and accuracy and has two components – an arrow rest and a sight. The arrow rest is the small circular disc that sits on the rail located on the side of the bow closest to the archer. The sight itself consists of a vertical extension (the arrow), a pin, and a housing. The pin determines the point of aim at just one distance and the housing provides support for the pin to maintain its shape and integrity.
Stabilizers
Stabilizers on a bow are used to increases accuracy, dampen vibration, and reduce the bow’s hand shock. Most Olympic bows are equipped with both Front-end and Back-end stabilizers. The Front-end stabilizers are usually short bars made of carbon fiber or aluminium and attached to the front of the bow. The Back-end stabilizers are usually longer bars and are more important for accuracy and vibration dampening.
Bow Release
Bow releases are used by Olympic archers to more accurately draw and hold the bowstring. A finger tab, tab, plunger, or mechanical release is attached to the wrist of the archer’s hand containing the bow. When the archer is ready to release the arrow, he or she will squeeze the trigger on the release to draw the bowstring back and then release.
Arrow Rest
The arrow rest is a small thread or feather at the top of the arrow shaft and is what the arrow contacts as the archer draws and releases. This helps to ensure the arrow is aligned correctly as it is released and gives a better flight path for the arrow.
Armguard
An armguard is a band worn on the forearm of the hand that holds the bow. The armguard helps protect the arm from the bowstring and ensures that the bowstring does not slip off the archer’s arm when drawing and aiming.
Bow String
The bow string is made of high-strength synthetic material and is what the archer pulls in order to draw the bow. Most Olympic archers will use a bow string with a loop at one end and an adjustable loop at the other end for easy and precise arrow placement.
Olympic archers carefully choose the accessories and components of their bows to maximize performance and accuracy. Bow sights, stabilizers, releases, arrow rests, arm guards, and bow strings are all common components of an Olympic bow, each playing an integral role in the accuracy and performance of the archer. Knowing how to use all of these components effectively is essential to success in the sport of archery.
With the right setup and equipment, Olympic archers can continue to improve their ability and precision, bringing joy to the sport and captivating audiences at the same time.
