The “Aluminum Arrow Argument” is a thought experiment aimed at raising some interesting questions about the nature of physical objects. The argument is often used to demonstrate the fundamental Ontological Problem of Material Coincidence. This problem is the issue of how to explain why objects share particular properties such as shape, size, or texture, when neither of those properties are actually a direct result of the object. The “Aluminum Arrow Argument” is a way of demonstrating that despite how simple it may be to describe particular physical objects, the actual explanations for how objects share certain characteristics is more complex than the descriptions may suggest.

The Argument
The Argument takes the form of a thought experiment in which an arrow is made of aluminum. It is then proposed that the arrow can be broken into three small components, each one being a piece of aluminum; the head, the tail and the shaft. According to the argument, these three components can all be considered one and the same arrow, independent of their physical location.
The argument then goes on to ask a basic question; why is it that these three separate pieces of aluminum are considered to be one single arrow? In order to answer this question it is proposed that the arrow must possess something which ties it together in a fundamental way; a unity or a sameness, which is greater than the sum of its physical parts.
It is proposed that the unity of the aluminum arrow is a result of an underlying unity; that something unites the three aluminum pieces to make it one arrow. This underlying unity is said to be necessary in order for the arrow to remain an arrow, and not a collection of three separate components assembled together.
From the aluminum arrow experiment, it can be concluded that the unity or sameness of an object must be something more than just its physical parts. It is proposed that there must be something more fundamental which ties the three pieces of aluminum together and makes them one arrow.
The Ontological Problem of Material Coincidence
The Argument raised by the aluminum arrow experiment also highlights the issue of Ontological Problem of Material Coincidence. This problem is the issue of how to explain why objects share particular properties such as shape, size, or texture, when neither of those properties are actually a result of the object. This poses the question of whether or not there is something which lies beneath the physical qualities of an object, which binds these qualities together in some fashion.
In terms of the aluminum arrow experiment, it is proposed that the unity or sameness of the object must be something more than just its physical parts, something beyond what is physically present. This is where the Ontological Problem of Material Coincidence arises; that is, how can this underlying unity be explained?
Conclusion
The “Aluminum Arrow Argument” is an interesting thought experiment which raises a number of difficult questions. It highlights the Ontological Problem of Material Coincidence, and raises the question of how can the unity or sameness of an object be explained, when it lies beneath the physical qualities of an object. Ultimately, the argument demonstrates that the explanations of physical objects are much more complicated than one may think, despite how simple and straight forward physical descriptions of objects may be.
