Prepare the Bow
Start by inspecting the instructions that came with your compound bow. If there are no instructions, do an online search for your bow’s make and model. Many bows come set from the factory with the necessary parts properly installed but a few manufacturers still require the shooter to tune the bow properly before use. Go through a safety check of the bow to ensure that all parts are properly installed and replace anything that is loose or damaged. Always seek help from a qualified archery technician if you are unsure of your setup.
Determine Draw Length
Measure your draw length using the manufacturer’s instructions and adjust the string length accordingly. A shooting tab can be used to help you find the proper draw length. It is important to shoot from the correct draw length as it will establish the proper arrow tension and make sure your shots are accurate. Use a quality measuring device and don’t forget to add an extra inch for the cam lean.
Site and Paper Tune
Mount the pins on your sight based on the manufacturer’s instructions. If you are unsure of how to do this, ask for help from a local pro shop or archery technician. Using a simple paper tuning technique, shoot a few arrows at a target and adjust the pins as necessary so that most of your arrows group close to the center. If you have more than one pin, make sure to adjust each pin so that the arrow flight is consistent.
Fletch and Spin Test
Confirm the fletching is applied correctly with the correct material. The correct fletching will ensure that the arrow will fly straight and stay on target. To check that your fletching is correctly applied, shoot an arrow and check its spins. If there is any sign of incorrect fletching, adjust or change the fletching until it spins correctly.
Check the Arrows
Make sure that the arrows are the same length and weight to ensure the most consistent and accurate shooting. Label each arrow or mark them with different colors so that you can identify them. Inspect the arrows for wear, dings, and burrs that can cause inconsistencies. Make sure that the fletching is perfectly applied in the same position and orientation.
Set Your Zero Distance
Once you have tuned and sighted your bow, choose a zero distance and begin shooting at different distances. Take your time and make sure to keep the bow in the same position as you shoot. Make all adjustments while keeping the bow in the same position to make sure you are getting accurate readings. Keep track of your scores and make notes on the accuracy of each shot.
Tune as Necessary
Once you have your distances established, go back and tune your bow at each distance. This will ensure that the arrow is flying accurately and result in a much more consistent and accurate shot. Make sure to check both the paper tuning and the spin test at each distance.
Sighting in a new compound bow may seem like a daunting task, but with a little patience and preparation it can be done with relative ease. Follow the steps outlined in this article to site and tune your bow safely and accurately. Keep track of the distances at which you make your shots and be sure to check both the paper tuning and the spin test to ensure that your arrows are flying correctly. With practice and care, you will soon be making accurate shots for a lifetime of fun and enjoyment.
