Maintaining your bowstring is essential to ensure its performance and to help it last for years. Keeping it in good condition means that it can be shot with accuracy and it won’t crack, fray, or break, especially during a hunt or tournament. One of the most important maintenance tasks you can perform for your bowstring is waxing it periodically. This will help to keep your string lubricated, which will prolong its life and make it easier to use.

Preparing the String
Before waxing your bowstring, you will first need to give it a good clean. This means brushing it with a bowstring cleaning brush and wiping the dust and dirt from it. You can then warm up the string by holding it in your hands, which will open up the strands of the string and allow wax to penetrate more evenly.
Applying Wax
Once the string is prepped, you are ready to apply the wax. Before applying wax, you should check to ensure that you have the right type of wax for your bowstring. Different strings need different waxes, and the wrong wax could damage your string. Once you have identified the correct wax for your bowstring, apply it evenly along the length of the string. The wax should cover all areas but not be too thick.
Waxing Tips
- Use a wax brush – a wax brush will help to ensure that the wax is distributed evenly throughout the string.
- Work in one direction – when brushing the string with wax, make sure to work in just one direction along the string to ensure even coverage.
- Let the wax cool – once you have applied the wax, let it cool down at least for several minutes before you let fly arrows.
Removing Wax
Any excess wax can be removed with a damp cloth. Make sure to remove all the excess wax as any left in the string could damage it. Be careful not to stir the string while it is damp as this could cause the strands to start fraying.
Waxing your bowstring is an important part of maintaining it, as it ensures that it works properly and lasts longer. Make sure that you clean and warm up the string before waxing, and use the right type of wax for your string. Also, make sure to brush the wax evenly into the string and let it cool before shooting. Finally, remove any excess wax from the string before use to prevent any damage. Taking a few moments to wax your bowstring will help to ensure that your string is in top operating condition.
