Choose the Right Wax
When selecting a wax for your bowstring, be sure to use the right type of wax. Most modern bowstrings are made of a mixture of polyethylene and polyester, so a wax specifically designed for these materials will work best. Additionally, you should avoid waxes that contain additives such as insecticides and dyes, as these can damage the material.
Clean the Bowstring
The next step is to clean your bowstring of any dirt and debris. This is important, as any contaminants can disrupt the wax, making it difficult to apply properly. You’ll want to use a mild soap and water solution to do this, and be sure to thoroughly rinse off the string once you’re done.
Applying the Wax
Once the bowstring is clean, you’re ready to apply the wax. Begin by applying a thin layer of wax to the top and bottom of the bowstring. You want to focus on the areas where the string contacts the cams and limb pockets, as these are the areas that experience the most friction. Then, use a cloth to rub the wax in, working your way from the center of the string out to each end.
Testing the Wax
Once you have applied the wax, you need to give it a few moments to set in. Then, dry fire your bow to test the wax. If everything has been done correctly, you should notice that the draw is smoother, and the string should move more freely. If not, you may want to add another layer of wax.
Waxing a bowstring is a simple process that requires just a few minutes of your time, and regular maintenance will help to extend the life of your bowstring. Learning how to wax a bowstring like a pro is an important part of archery, and following these simple steps will ensure that your bow performs at its best.
With the right wax and a bit of effort, you can keep your bowstring in great shape and ensure that it will serve you well for years to come.
