The Basics of Aiming
The most basic compound bow aiming technique is to draw the arrow and focus your sight and anchoring points. Your sight and anchor point should be the same every time you let an arrow fly. That’s why it’s important to practice your form regularly. To do that, you’ll need to practice the following steps:
- Focus: When you draw the bowstring, focus on the aiming point of your target. This is easy to do when using a single pin sight.
- Anchor Point: Find a comfortable place on your face, usually the corner of your mouth, where you can bring the string back to for each shooting cycle. The aim of your anchor point is to provide a consistent point of reference for your draw hand.
- Alignment: Match the point of the arrow to the point of the sight, and confirm your sight alignment with the aiming spot on your target.
Minor Adjustments
For experienced compound bow archers, it’s important to remember that small adjustments in form and technique can produce vast improvements in accuracy. Here are a few of the finer points you should pay attention to.
- Retention: Keep your muscles and rest of your body relaxed until it’s time to release the arrow.
- Stretching: Complete at least two or three full draws prior to shooting. This will help prevent fatigue in muscles and release.
- Stance: A good rule of thumb is to always keep your shoulders, hips and feet parallel to the target.
Aiming a compound bow correctly is an essential part of becoming a proficient archer. To become a well-rounded compound bow archer, incorporate the basics of form and technique, practice regularly, and be sure to fine-tune your aim before each and every shot.
By adopting good technique and making small adjustments, you’ll soon become an expert with your compound bow. It takes time and patience, but when done correctly, compound bow shooting can be an incredibly rewarding experience.
