A compound bow is a modern bow designed to maximize the efficiency of the archer, typically with the use of a levering system, built into the design of the bow itself. Compound bows are the bow of choice for competition archers and bowhunters thanks to the combination of great speed, accuracy, and superior range. Compound bows are composed of a complex system of pulleys, cams, and/or other components, which work to reduce the draw weight felt by the archer.
Compound Bow Construction and Components
Compound bows are typically composed of two main components: the riser, and the limbs. The riser serves to mount the bow’s components, and also provides many of the structural/mechanical properties of the bow as a whole. Risers are typically made of aluminum, carbon or a combination of both. Coupled to the riser are the limbs, which provide much of the force used to pull and hold the bowstring taut.
Cam System
The most essential component of a compound bow is the cam system. Cam systems work to reduce the total draw weight of the bow during shooting, allowing the archer to shoot farther and more accurately. There are two main types of cams – single cams and binary cams. Single cams typically feature a single cam on the bottom limb, where binary cams feature a cam on both limbs. Single cams tend to be easier to tune than binary cams, which is why many beginner archers opt for single cams.
Other Components
Compound bows also include several other components, such as:
- Bowstring
- Releases
- Draw stops
- Draw Modules
- String suppressors
- Cables
- Arrows
- Quivers
All of these components work together to reduce the draw weight, provide a consistent draw on the bowstring, and give the archer maximum control.
Compound bows have been designed to make archery much easier and more efficient. By reducing draw weight, cams provide the ability to shoot farther and more accurately. Coupled with the other components, such as the bowstring, releases, draw stops, and so on, compound bows put more power behind every shot. Whether for competitive archery or bowhunting, compound bows are a great choice for any archer.
