Choosing the right arrow for your bow can be a daunting task. There are so many factors to consider – from arrow spine to arrow length and arrow weight, to the kind of vanes you’ll use. Knowing how to properly select the right arrow for your bow and your shooting style is key to being successful with archery.

Pick the Right Arrow Spine
Arrow spine is the most important factor in choosing the right arrow. The spine size you need will depend on the type and weight of your bow, as well as your draw weight (the force required to draw a bow string to a full draw). All arrows have a spine number (“x” number) which indicates its flexibility; the higher the number, the stiffer the arrow. Make sure you know the draw weight and type of bow you’ll be using when selecting the arrow spine.
Consider the Weight of the Arrow
Knowing the weight of an arrow is another critical factor. This is usually called the “grain” weight and is given in units of “grains per inch” (GPI). The right arrow weight ensures the arrow has stability in its flight, even when the wind picks up. Generally, traditional bows require a heavier shaft, while bows designed for competition shooting should use an arrow that is lighter.
Select the Length of the Arrow
Arrow length is determined by the distance from the inside corner of the bow’s nock point to the pivot point where the arrow comes in contact with the bow. To find the right arrow length you need to consider the bow’s brace height (the distance between the string and the grip) as well as the arrow spine and weight. If the arrow is too long, it won’t be able to be shot out of the bow with any efficiency; if the arrow is too short, it won’t have enough momentum to reach its target.
Select Fletching & Nocks
Fletching is the plastic or feather fins that are applied to the end of the arrow. To ensure an optimal flight, the vanes should be the same size, and the the same design on both ends of the arrow. Fletching should also be suited to the type of bow you’re shooting – recurve bows require shorter fletching than those used on compound bows. There are a variety of nock options available, and they should be made from durable materials such as plastic, aluminum, or carbon fiber.
Choosing the right arrow for your bow is a critical process, and there are many different factors to consider. Start by properly selecting the arrow spine that will work best with your bow and draw weight, then account for the arrow weight, length, nocks, and fletching. Taking the time to make these careful calculations will ensure that you have the right equipment for your style of shooting, and can help you make the most of your time on the range.
Arrow Selection – How to Choose the Right One
What is the right arrow for you to use with your bow? This video addresses that question and goes into detail to help you understand why you should choose one type of arrow spine over another. Also, when trying to figure out the overall weight of your arrow for trying to create as much speed as possible for target archery, multiply 5 grains per pound of draw weight. Example 70 pound pull x 5 grains = 350 grain arrow. For hunting, people generally multiple between 7 and 8 grains per pound – so at 70 pounds x 7.5 grains = 525 grain arrow. Some people will go heavier than this, and some lighter. I personally think 450 grains is plenty, and have even hunted with 350 grains with great success because of my broadhead combination with the arrows.
