Bow tuning is an essential skill for any archer looking to ensure the performance of their bow and arrows. With the proper adjustments and equipment, your arrows can travel faster, with greater accuracy and farther distances. Having the right rest setup is an important part of the process, since it will enable you to line up your shots correctly and help maintain consistent performance. Below are some bow tuning tips and basics of rest setup to help you get started.

Tuning Tips
Check String, Cable and String Height Adjustment
- Check the string for signs of wear and tear, and make sure it is properly waxed.
- Inspect cables for wear and replace if necessary.
- String Height Adjustment should be set so that your arrow passes by it with just a few millimeters of clearance. Do not have the string pulling on it.
Paper Tuning
Paper Tuning is a great way to check the performance of your bow and arrows. To do a paper tune, set up a large heavy piece of paper, around 60 cm x 60 cm, 5-10 meters away, and shoot several arrows at it. Examine the tear in the paper and how the arrow is grouping on the paper. For example, if the arrow is cutting through the top half of the paper, it could indicate you need to make adjust the rest downward.
Set up a Bow Squaring
A Bow Squaring is an effective tool to help ensure your rest is perfectly square to your string. You can buy a bow squaring jig or you can make your own. Place the jig on your riser, align it with the arrow rest, and then make sure it is perfectly square. This will help ensure consistent arrow flight.
Basic Rest Setup
The rest should be centered and perpendicular on the riser. It should also be level so the arrow will glide in the same direction every time. You should also make sure there is clearance between the rest and the string. Some rests come pre-angled or with a specification which should be followed. Finally, make sure your arrows clear the bow during release and that the clearance is sufficient to avoid any contact.
By following these bow tuning tips and basics of rest setup, you will be able to maximize the performance of your bow and arrows. Additionally, it is important to always check the tuning of your bow whenever you experience changes in performance. It is also wise to practice paper tuning regularly. With the correct setup and maintenance, you can ensure the accuracy, stability and longevity of your bow shooting.
