Paper tuning is an important consideratioon for bow hunters in the pursuit of accuracy and precision. As most bow hunters know, the bow must be finely tuned in order to aim and accurately shoot a target. If done correctly, paper tuning fine tunes a bow’s sight, stabilizers and tension so that arrows fly accurately and consistently when released. In this article, we will discuss how to paper tune a bow for optimal performance.
Table of Contents
Step 1: Preparing the Bow
The first step in paper tuning is to prepare the bow for tuning. This includes checking the bow for proper balance, alignment, and weight. The limbs should be lined up properly, and all the accessories such as the sight and stabilizer should be securely connected and aligned correctly. If the bow is not set up properly, it will not shoot accurately, no matter how much tuning it receives.
Step 2: Setting Up the Target
Next, you should set up a target, such as a paper plate, at a distance of five to seven yards. Mount the target to a backer, such as a cardboard box or a piece of plywood. It is also helpful to count the arrows before shooting to make sure you don’t miss any.
Step 3: Paper Tuning
Once the bow and target are set up, it’s time to begin paper tuning. Take three arrows and shoot each one through the center of the target. Make sure you aim and release the arrows as you normally would for hunting. If the arrows form a group, then the paper tuning is complete. If not, then you will need to make adjustments.
Vertical Tuning
If your arrows are lining up in a horizontal line, such as in an arching pattern, then you need to make a vertical adjustment. To do this, start by tightening the bow’s top limb one-half turn. Reshoot the arrows at the target and check the results. If the arrows still don’t form a group, tighten the top limb an additional one-half turn and shoot again. You can also loosen the top limb one half turn if the arrows seem to be grouping too low.
Horizontal Tuning
If your arrows seem to be forming a vertical line, then you need to do the opposite of what you did for vertical tuning. Start by loosening the bottom limb one-half turn. Reshoot the arrows at the target and check the results. If the arrows still don’t form a group, loosen the bottom limb an additional one-half turn and shoot again. You can also tighten the bottom limb one-half turn if the arrows seem to be grouping too far left.
Step 4: Final Adjustments
Once you have the arrows grouping, you can make fine adjustments to the sight, stabilizers, and string tension if necessary. If you are still having difficulty with the accuracy, you can try adjusting the nock point or adding weight to the stabilizer.
It is also important to remember that you should not make too many adjustments at once. Make small modifications and shoot a few arrows before making additional adjustments.
Paper tuning is an important skill for bow hunters to master in order to ensure accuracy and consistency. By following these steps, you should be able to fine tune your bow and achieve the accuracy that you need for bowhunting success. With patience and practice, you should be able to paper tune you bow to achieve the performance you desire.
