Understanding the draw weight of a compound bow is an important component of shooting accurately and getting the most out of your bow. Step One – Rinse, Lube and Inspect
Before providing any modifications to your bow, it’s important to inspect, clean and lubricate the moving parts. Start by wiping down the riser and limbs, paying special attention to the cams, the axles, rest, bow string and cable guard. A light coating of bow wax may help reduce wear and tear.
Step Two – Measure and Calculate
Using a bow press, remove the bow cables and string from the cam, and measure from the throat of the grip to the string, then multiply that measurement by the cam’s draw length multiplier. This will give you the base, or initial, draw length of the compound bow. For example, a bow with a 28-inch draw length and a 3-inch idler wheel will come out to 33.75 total inches.
Step Three – Adjust the Bow
To adjust the draw weight, begin by loosening or tightening the limb or cable bolts using an Allen wrench. Most compound bows center around a 60# draw weight, and each turn of the limb or cable bolt usually increases or decreases the draw weight by around 2-3 pounds. Each compound bow’s specs are different, so be sure to check with the manufacturer for the appropriate specs before making adjustments.
Step Four – Test It Out
Once the bow is fine-tuned to the desired draw weight, reattach the cables and string and make sure that the sight and rest are properly aligned in relation to the cams. Draw the bow back several times, double-checking for any abnormalities.
Figuring out the draw weight on a compound bow requires a few tools and some simple calculations, but it’s not a difficult task. With a basic understanding of the bow components and some patience, it’s possible find the perfect combination of draw length, draw weight and comfort from your compound bow.
